What is a Finger Dislocation?
When a joint in your finger gets jammed or overextended, it may cause a dislocation. Finger dislocations happen when the end of one joint comes out of the socket. A dislocation commonly happens during sports activities, or falling on an outstretched hand.
Symptoms of Finger Dislocation
The symptoms of a dislocated finger include:
- Pain
- Difficulty moving the finger
- Finger appears to be crooked and swollen
- Feeling of numbness or tingling
- Break in the skin
Diagnosis of Finger Dislocation
Your doctor can diagnose a dislocated finger by a physical examination of your hand. Imaging tests like X-rays will be ordered to confirm the diagnosis of dislocation.
Treatment for Finger Dislocation
Initially, you will be advised to remove any jewelry on the finger. You will be instructed to apply an ice pack and keep your hand in an elevated position to reduce swelling. Your doctor will realign your dislocated finger, usually under local anesthesia. Next, your doctor may apply a splint or buddy tape it to the next finger for support. Usually, occupational hand therapy is needed to aid in an improved functional recovery. With certain types of injuries, surgery is sometimes recommended.
